nivellevyjä

Nivellevyjä is a Finnish term that does not have a single standardized definition in medical literature. In most sources the structures it would refer to are described using the established terms articular discs (nivelkierukat) or intervertebral discs (välilevyt). The use of nivellevyjä is therefore often considered informal or ambiguous, depending on context.

As articular discs, nivellevyjä would denote fibrocartilaginous cushions within certain synovial joints that enhance joint congruence and distribute loads. A well-known example is the disc of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ); other joints such as the sternoclavicular joint also have an articular disc. They can be injured or degenerate, causing pain, reduced range of motion, or mechanical symptoms like clicking or locking. Diagnosis relies on clinical examination and imaging, particularly MRI. Treatment ranges from conservative approaches (rest, physical therapy, anti-inflammatory drugs) to surgical options (arthroscopy, disc repair or reconstruction) in persistent cases.

As intervertebral discs, nivellevyjä would refer to the discs between the vertebrae that provide cushioning and mobility in the spine. Each disc consists of a gel-like nucleus pulposus surrounded by a fibrous annulus fibrosus. Degeneration or herniation can produce back pain or radicular symptoms; management includes physical therapy, analgesics, and, in some cases, surgical procedures such as discectomy or spinal fusion.
