Nitrile butadiene, also known as acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber (NBR) or nitrile rubber, is a synthetic rubber copolymer. It is produced by the polymerization of acrylonitrile and butadiene. The ratio of these two monomers can be varied to tailor the properties of the resulting rubber.

The presence of acrylonitrile in the polymer chain imparts oil and fuel resistance to NBR. Generally, higher acrylonitrile content leads to improved resistance to non-polar solvents, oils, and fuels, but can decrease flexibility at low temperatures. Conversely, lower acrylonitrile content results in better low-temperature flexibility but reduced oil resistance. Butadiene, on the other hand, contributes to the rubbery elasticity and abrasion resistance of NBR.

NBR is known for its excellent resistance to petroleum-based oils, greases, and fuels, as well as water and many acids and bases. It also exhibits good mechanical properties, including high tensile strength, abrasion resistance, and tear strength. However, NBR is susceptible to degradation from ozone, UV radiation, and strong oxidizing agents.

Due to its favorable combination of properties, NBR finds widespread applications in various industries. It is commonly used in the manufacturing of seals, O-rings, gaskets, hoses, fuel lines, conveyor belts, and protective gloves for handling oils and chemicals. Its versatility makes it a crucial material in automotive, aerospace, petroleum, and industrial sectors.
