Nitriilikumi, often abbreviated as NBR, is a synthetic rubber copolymer derived from acrylonitrile and butadiene. Its primary characteristic is its excellent resistance to oils, fuels, and many other chemicals. This makes it a highly sought-after material in applications where contact with petroleum-based products is common.

The properties of nitrile rubber can be varied by altering the ratio of acrylonitrile to butadiene during its synthesis. A higher acrylonitrile content generally leads to improved resistance to oils and fuels but can reduce flexibility, especially at lower temperatures. Conversely, a lower acrylonitrile content enhances elasticity and low-temperature performance but decreases oil resistance.

Due to its robust chemical resistance, nitrile rubber is widely used in the manufacturing of seals, gaskets, hoses, gloves, and O-rings. These components are essential in automotive, aerospace, petroleum, and industrial sectors. Nitrile rubber also exhibits good abrasion resistance and tensile strength, further contributing to its utility in demanding environments. While it has good general-purpose properties, it is not recommended for use with strong oxidizing agents, ozone, or certain chlorinated solvents. It can be compounded with various additives to achieve specific performance characteristics, such as improved heat resistance or flame retardancy.
