Nimmristluupõimiku, also known as the lumbar plexus, is a complex network of nerves located in the lower back region of the body. It is formed by the anterior rami of the spinal nerves L1 through L4, with a small contribution from T12. This intricate structure plays a crucial role in innervating the muscles and skin of the anterior and medial thigh, as well as contributing to the innervation of the abdominal wall and the gluteal region.

The lumbar plexus is situated within the psoas major muscle and posterior to the quadratus lumborum muscle. Its branches emerge from the posterior aspect of the psoas major and then divide into multiple nerves. Key branches include the iliohypogastric nerve, ilioinguinal nerve, genitofemoral nerve, lateral femoral cutaneous nerve, obturator nerve, and the femoral nerve. Each of these nerves is responsible for specific motor and sensory functions in the lower extremities and pelvic region.

Damage or injury to the lumbar plexus can result from various causes, including trauma, surgical procedures, or compression due to tumors or hematomas. Symptoms of lumbar plexus injury can vary depending on the specific nerves affected but commonly include weakness or paralysis of the leg muscles, sensory deficits such as numbness or tingling, and pain. The severity of symptoms depends on the extent and location of the damage. Diagnosis typically involves a thorough neurological examination, imaging studies like MRI, and electrodiagnostic tests such as EMG. Treatment aims to address the underlying cause and may include physical therapy, pain management, and in some cases, surgical intervention.
