Nietmetalelementen, also known as nonmetals, are a class of chemical elements that lack the typical properties of metals. They are typically poor conductors of heat and electricity, and are often brittle in their solid form. Nonmetals are found in various states of matter at room temperature, including gases, liquids, and solids. They tend to have higher ionization energies and electronegativities compared to metals.

The nonmetal elements are located on the right side of the periodic table, with the exception of hydrogen, which is positioned in Group 1. This group includes elements such as carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, phosphorus, sulfur, selenium, and the halogens (fluorine, chlorine, bromine, iodine, astatine) and the noble gases (helium, neon, argon, krypton, xenon, radon).

In chemical reactions, nonmetals tend to gain or share electrons to form covalent or ionic bonds. They are essential components of many organic and inorganic compounds. For instance, oxygen and nitrogen are the primary gases in Earth's atmosphere, and carbon is the backbone of all organic life. Hydrogen, though chemically a nonmetal, occupies a unique position due to its simple atomic structure and its ability to form positive ions. The halogens are highly reactive and readily form salts with metals. Noble gases, on the other hand, are characterized by their inertness due to their stable electron configurations.
