Niesaturacjon is a term used in chemistry to describe the state of a molecule that contains unsaturated features, such as carbon–carbon double or triple bonds or ring structures, rather than a fully saturated framework in which all carbon valences are satisfied by single bonds to hydrogen or other atoms.

Chemists quantify unsaturation with the degree of unsaturation, also called the double bond equivalents (DBE). For a simple hydrocarbon with formula CxHy, DBE is often estimated as DBE = x − y/2 + 1, with adjustments for heteroatoms. In general, DBE equals the number of rings plus the number of pi bonds in the molecule. This metric helps compare different structures and predict reactivity.

Significance: The degree of unsaturation influences chemical reactivity, as unsaturated sites participate in addition reactions, hydrogenation, polymerization, and various catalytic processes.
