Nielemissvaikeudet, also known as dysphagia, refers to difficulties in swallowing. This condition can affect any stage of the swallowing process, from the mouth to the stomach. It can range from mild discomfort to a complete inability to swallow, posing significant health risks such as malnutrition, dehydration, and aspiration pneumonia.

The causes of nielemissvaikeudet are diverse. They can be broadly categorized into neurological, structural, and functional issues. Neurological conditions like stroke, Parkinson's disease, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) can impair the nerve signals necessary for coordinated swallowing. Structural problems, such as tumors, strictures in the esophagus, or changes after surgery or radiation therapy to the head and neck, can physically obstruct the passage of food. Functional issues may arise from aging, muscle weakness, or problems with the coordination of the swallowing muscles.

Diagnosing nielemissvaikeudet typically involves a medical history, a physical examination, and often specialized tests. These tests can include a videofluoroscopic swallow study (VFSS), which uses X-rays to visualize the swallowing process, or a fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES), which uses a small camera to examine the throat.

Treatment strategies are tailored to the underlying cause and severity of the dysphagia. They may include dietary modifications, such as changing food consistency or using thickening agents, swallowing exercises and therapy to improve muscle function and coordination, or in some cases, medical or surgical interventions to address structural abnormalities. Preventing complications like aspiration is a primary goal of management.
