Neurotranszmisszió, often translated as neurotransmission, refers to the process by which signaling molecules called neurotransmitters are released by a neuron and bind to and activate the receptors of another neuron. This fundamental mechanism underlies communication within the nervous system, enabling the transmission of information between nerve cells and between neurons and effector cells like muscles or glands.

The process begins with an electrical impulse, an action potential, arriving at the axon terminal of a presynaptic neuron. This electrical signal triggers the opening of voltage-gated calcium channels, allowing calcium ions to flow into the terminal. The influx of calcium ions causes synaptic vesicles, small sacs containing neurotransmitters, to fuse with the presynaptic membrane and release their contents into the synaptic cleft, the tiny space between the two neurons.

Once in the synaptic cleft, neurotransmitters diffuse across the gap and bind to specific receptor proteins on the postsynaptic neuron's membrane. This binding causes a conformational change in the receptor, leading to the opening or closing of ion channels. Depending on the type of neurotransmitter and receptor, this can result in either excitation (making the postsynaptic neuron more likely to fire an action potential) or inhibition (making it less likely to fire).

After binding and initiating a response, neurotransmitters are quickly removed from the synaptic cleft through various mechanisms, including enzymatic degradation, reuptake by the presynaptic neuron, or diffusion away from the synapse. This rapid clearance is crucial for ensuring that the synapse is ready to transmit new signals and to prevent continuous stimulation or inhibition. The balance and precise regulation of neurotranszmisszió are vital for all neural functions, including thought, emotion, movement, and sensory perception.
