Neurotransmittereinä, or neurotransmitters in English, are chemical messengers that nerve cells, or neurons, use to transmit signals to other cells. These signals can be sent to other neurons, muscle cells, or gland cells. Neurotransmitters are released from the axon terminal of one neuron and cross the synaptic cleft, a small gap between neurons, to bind to receptors on the postsynaptic neuron. This binding triggers a response in the receiving cell, either exciting or inhibiting its activity.
