Neurotransmitters are chemical messengers that transmit signals across a chemical synapse, such as a neuromuscular junction, from one neuron (nerve cell) to another 'target' neuron, muscle cell, or gland cell. They are essential for nerve impulse transmission and play a crucial role in virtually all functions of the nervous system. When an electrical impulse reaches the end of a neuron, it triggers the release of neurotransmitters into the synaptic cleft, the tiny gap between neurons. These molecules then bind to specific receptors on the surface of the receiving cell, either exciting or inhibiting its activity.
