Neuronavigation, also known as image-guided surgery, is a medical technology that allows surgeons to precisely locate anatomical structures within the body during surgery. It combines imaging techniques with a tracking system to create a real-time 3D map of the patient's anatomy. This map is then overlaid onto the surgical field, providing the surgeon with a virtual guidance system.

The process typically begins with acquiring pre-operative medical images, such as CT or MRI scans, of the patient's brain or other target areas. These images are then imported into a neuronavigation system. Before surgery, a patient-specific tracking device is attached to the patient's head or body. During the operation, the surgeon uses a special instrument, such as a surgical probe or drill, which is also equipped with a tracking sensor. The neuronavigation system constantly monitors the position of both the patient and the surgical instrument in relation to the pre-operative images.

This real-time tracking allows the surgeon to see the exact location of the instrument on the 3D map, guiding them with remarkable accuracy. This is particularly crucial in delicate procedures like brain surgery, where vital structures are in close proximity. Neuronavigation helps to minimize damage to surrounding tissues, reduce surgical time, and improve the overall precision and safety of the operation. It is widely used in neurosurgery, orthopedic surgery, and other specialties where precise anatomical targeting is essential.
