Neuromusculáris, often rendered as neuromuscular in English, refers to the integrated system that connects the nervous system to skeletal muscle and to disorders arising from its components. The neuromuscular system includes motor neurons in the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves, the neuromuscular junction where nerve signals are transmitted to muscle, and the skeletal muscle fibers themselves. A motor unit consists of a motor neuron and the muscle fibers it innervates, and coordinated activity depends on intact neural pathways, synaptic transmission, and muscle excitation-contraction coupling.

Physiology at the neuromuscular junction begins when a nerve impulse reaches the motor terminal and triggers the release of acetylcholine. The neurotransmitter binds to receptors on the muscle’s end plate, initiating an action potential that propagates along the muscle fiber, resulting in calcium release and muscle contraction through cross-bridge cycling. Disruptions at any point—neuron, synapse, or muscle fiber—can cause weakness, fatigue, cramps, or atrophy.

Common neuromuscular conditions are categorized as motor neuron diseases (for example, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), neuropathies (such as diabetic polyneuropathy), neuromuscular junction disorders (notably myasthenia gravis and Lambert-Eaton syndrome), and primary myopathies (including muscular dystrophies and inflammatory myopathies). Diagnosis typically involves history and examination, electrodiagnostic tests such as electromyography and nerve conduction studies, laboratory analyses, and sometimes muscle or nerve biopsy. Imaging and specialized tests may aid assessment.

Treatment is condition-specific and may include physical therapy, respiratory support, assistive devices, and disease-modifying therapies or immunotherapies for autoimmune neuromuscular disorders. Prognosis varies widely by disorder and severity, with multidisciplinary care improving function and quality of life for many patients.
