It denotes the net amount set aside in the financial statements to cover expected future costs or losses that are probable and can be reliably estimated. Typical targets of nettovaraus include doubtful debts, warranty obligations, restructuring costs, legal settlements, and environmental liabilities. The idea is to anticipate those future outflows and present a prudent estimate of liabilities on the balance sheet.

Calculation and adjustment: A provision is recognized when a present obligation has arisen, it is probable that an outflow of resources will be required, and the amount can be estimated reliably. The nettovaraus reflects movements such as new provisions, increases or decreases due to changes in estimates, expenditures to settle the obligation, and reversals of unused portions. For example, a company might record a gross warranty provision of 100 units; if 20 units are later used to pay claims and 5 are reversed, the nettovaraus would be 75 units remaining.
