Nettotyö is a Finnish term used to describe the portion of working time that is actually spent on productive tasks, excluding breaks, downtime, and non-operational activities. In capacity planning and labor economics, nettotyö is used to measure the effective labor input available for producing goods or delivering services. It contrasts with bruttotyö (gross work time), which includes scheduled working time plus breaks and other non-productive periods.

In practice, nettotyö is calculated by taking the total scheduled or calendar working time and subtracting downtime such as machine failures, maintenance, changeovers, breaks, training, meetings, and other non-value-adding periods. For example, an employee scheduled for 8 hours per day with a 0.5-hour lunch and 0.5-hour other breaks and 0.5-hour meetings yields a nettotyö of 6.5 hours.

Nettotyö is used to compute productivity indicators like net output per net hour and to assess capacity utilization. It is important to note that the definition of nettotyö can vary between industries and organizations depending on how downtime and non-operational time are categorized.

In project management or manufacturing, nettotyö provides a more accurate picture of actual productive capacity than total or gross working time, enabling better planning and performance comparisons over time or across units.
