When used, it most often refers to the complement of a network in the graph-theoretic sense; in other contexts it may denote a context-dependent operation on nets in topology or network theory, depending on the author.

In the graph-theoretic interpretation, a network is modeled as a simple graph G = (V, E) with vertex set V and edge set E. The netscomplement of G, often denoted G^c or sometimes G′, is the complement graph (V, E^c), where E^c consists of all unordered pairs {u, v} with u ≠ v and {u, v} ∉ E. That is, every non-edge becomes an edge and every edge becomes a non-edge. If the original graph has n vertices, the total number of possible edges is n(n−1)/2, so deg_G^c(v) = (n−1) − deg_G(v). The concept is standard in graph theory and is related to properties such as connectedness and clique number, with several results describing how characteristics of G relate to those of G^c. Notation varies, and some authors simply write G^c or G′ for the complement.
