A nestethermometer, or liquid-in-glass thermometer, is a device used to measure temperature. It operates on the principle of thermal expansion. The thermometer consists of a glass tube with a sealed bulb at one end, containing a liquid. This liquid, commonly mercury or colored alcohol, expands when heated and contracts when cooled. The glass tube has a narrow bore, or capillary, with markings along its length indicating temperature values. As the liquid in the bulb heats up, it rises within the capillary tube, and the level of the liquid against the markings indicates the current temperature. Conversely, as the temperature decreases, the liquid level falls.
