Nestekidenäytöllä, often abbreviated as LCD (Liquid Crystal Display), is a type of display technology used in a wide variety of electronic devices. It works by manipulating light through the properties of liquid crystals. These crystals are organic compounds that exhibit properties between those of conventional liquids and solid crystals. When an electric current is applied, the liquid crystals can change their alignment.

In an LCD panel, a backlight, typically LED or fluorescent, provides illumination. This light passes through a polarizing filter, then through a layer of liquid crystals. Behind the liquid crystals is another polarizing filter, oriented perpendicular to the first. The electric current applied to the liquid crystals controls their orientation, which in turn affects how much light passes through the second polarizing filter. By controlling the voltage applied to individual pixels, the brightness of each pixel can be adjusted, creating an image. Color LCDs use color filters in addition to the polarizers and liquid crystals to produce a full spectrum of colors. This technology is prevalent in televisions, computer monitors, smartphones, and digital cameras.
