Nervusärsykkeet, also known as nerve impulses or action potentials, are the fundamental units of communication within the nervous system. They are brief, all-or-none electrical signals that travel along nerve cells, or neurons, to transmit information from one part of the body to another.

These impulses are generated and propagated through a complex process involving the movement of ions across the neuron's cell membrane. When a neuron receives a sufficient stimulus, ion channels open, allowing positively charged sodium ions to rush into the cell. This influx of positive charge causes a rapid depolarization of the membrane, creating the action potential. Immediately following, potassium ions flow out of the cell, repolarizing the membrane and returning it to its resting state. This wave of depolarization and repolarization propagates down the length of the axon, the long projection of the neuron.

Nervusärsykkeet are crucial for a wide range of bodily functions, including sensory perception, motor control, thought processes, and regulation of internal organs. The speed at which these impulses travel varies depending on the type of neuron and the presence of a myelin sheath, a fatty insulating layer that speeds up conduction.
