Nerovnosti, a term used primarily in Czech and Slovak contexts, refers to mathematical statements that express a relationship between two values or expressions where one is not equal. In mathematics, an inequality is typically written using symbols such as <, ≤, >, or ≥. It indicates that one side of the inequality is strictly less than, less than or equal to, strictly greater than, or greater than or equal to the other side, respectively. The study of inequalities spans several branches of mathematics, including algebra, calculus, analysis, and optimization theory.

Types of inequalities are diverse. Linear inequalities involve variables to the first power and define half-planes or half-spaces in Euclidean space. Polynomial inequalities of higher degree produce more complex regions, whereas functional inequalities involve relationships between functions, such as the triangle inequality which states that the absolute value of a sum does not exceed the sum of absolute values. Classical results include the Cauchy–Schwarz inequality, Hölder's inequality, and Jensen's inequality, each with broad applications in analysis and probability.

In applied contexts, inequalities form the foundation of linear programming and convex optimization, where feasible regions are defined by a set of linear constraints. In economics, inequality measures like the Gini coefficient assess disparities in income or wealth distribution. The term "nerovnosti" also appears in social sciences to describe systemic differences in opportunities and resources among populations, prompting policy discussions on equity and social justice.

Historically, the notion of inequalities dates back to ancient Greek mathematics, but modern symbolic representation emerged in the 17th century. German mathematician Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz introduced the symbol “≤” and “≥”, while later mathematicians formalized properties and theorems that underpin contemporary use.
