Nepetrite is a rare mineral discovered in the Urals region of Russia. Its chemical composition is primarily magnesium oxide and titanium dioxide, with the formula MgO·TiO2. It is characterized by its dark color, often appearing black or dark brown, and its vitreous luster. Nepetrite is an exceptionally hard mineral, ranking high on the Mohs scale, making it resistant to scratching and abrasion.

The crystal structure of nepetrite is cubic, and it typically forms in small, granular masses or as inclusions within other rock formations. Its formation is thought to occur under high-temperature and high-pressure conditions, often associated with ultramafic igneous rocks. Due to its rarity and specific formation environment, nepetrite is not found in large deposits and is primarily of scientific interest to mineralogists.

The mineral was named in honor of the Russian mineralogist Petr Ivanovich Nepetrit, who first identified and studied its characteristics.
