Neonlámpákban refers to the use of neon gas within a lamp. Neon lamps are a type of gas-discharge lamp that uses a noble gas to produce light. When an electric current is passed through a tube containing neon gas at low pressure, the gas atoms are excited and emit light. Pure neon gas in a discharge tube emits a characteristic reddish-orange light. This distinctive color is the origin of the term "neon lights," though the term is often used more broadly to refer to any brightly colored gas-discharge lighting, even those using other gases or mixtures.

The operation of a neon lamp relies on the principle of electrical discharge. A high voltage is applied across the electrodes at either end of the tube, causing the neon gas to ionize. This ionization creates a plasma, which then emits photons as the excited electrons return to their ground state. The color of the light can be modified by adding other gases or by coating the inside of the tube with phosphors, which fluoresce when exposed to ultraviolet light produced by the discharge. However, the most iconic neon lamp produces its characteristic reddish-orange hue solely from the neon gas itself. Neon lamps have been used for decorative lighting, signage, and as indicator lights for decades due to their energy efficiency and long lifespan.
