Nenäsuoliston is a term that appears in some Finnish discussions to describe the bidirectional interaction between the nasal mucosa and the gastrointestinal tract. The word combines nenä (nose) and suolisto (gastrointestinal tract) and is sometimes used to refer to a broader concept of mucosal cross-talk or the gut–nose axis. It is not yet established as a formal field with a standardized definition in all scientific or medical literature, and researchers more commonly discuss the nasal microbiome, the gut microbiome, and their shared immune and metabolic signaling.

Conceptually, nenäsuolisto covers how the two mucosal surfaces influence each other through immune mediators, microbial exchange, and microbial metabolites. Possible mechanisms include swallowing nasal secretions that introduce microbes to the gut, systemic immune signaling (such as cytokines and IgA), and metabolites like short-chain fatty acids that can affect distant sites.
