Nearomatiche is a term used in organic chemistry to describe cyclic organic compounds that exhibit some, but not all, of the properties of aromatic compounds. Aromaticity is a special property associated with certain cyclic, planar molecules that possess a delocalized pi electron system. These compounds, like benzene, are exceptionally stable and undergo specific types of reactions.

Nearomatic compounds, in contrast, may have a cyclic structure and some degree of pi electron delocalization, but they fail to meet the strict criteria for full aromaticity. These criteria typically include satisfying Hückel's rule, which states that an aromatic system must have (4n + 2) pi electrons, where n is a non-negative integer. Compounds that have 4n pi electrons in a cyclic, delocalized system are often described as antiaromatic, which is a state of destabilization.

Nearomaticity can arise in several ways. For instance, a molecule might be cyclic and possess pi electrons, but its geometry may deviate from planarity, hindering effective delocalization. Alternatively, a molecule might have a delocalized pi system but an insufficient number of pi electrons to be aromatic, or too many pi electrons (falling into the antiaromatic category). These compounds often display reactivity patterns that are intermediate between those of typical aliphatic and fully aromatic compounds. They might undergo some substitution reactions characteristic of aromatics, but often with less ease, and may also exhibit addition reactions more readily than truly aromatic species. The study of nearomatic systems helps chemists understand the nuances of electronic structure and stability in organic molecules.
