naumachia
A naumachia, plural naumachiae, was a spectacular staged naval battle of ancient Rome. These events recreated famous sea battles, often with condemned criminals or prisoners of war forced to fight to the death aboard specially constructed ships. The first known naumachia was commissioned by Julius Caesar in 46 BC. He had a basin dug near the Campus Martius in Rome and filled with water, upon which he staged a battle between Phoenician and Egyptian fleets.
