Nauitharding is a term used in speculative materials science to describe a thermomechanical treatment intended to produce a high-hardness, wear-resistant metal while preserving adequate toughness. The concept combines nanoscale grain refinement with dispersion strengthening through nano-sized precipitates.

The proposed mechanism involves two linked stages: first, severe plastic deformation or related processes refine the matrix to the nanometer scale; second, a carefully controlled aging or annealing step promotes the nucleation and growth of fine precipitates that impede dislocation motion. Together, grain boundary strengthening and dispersion hardening are intended to yield a superior hardness-to-toughness balance.

Practically, nauitharding may be pursued in alloys such as steels, aluminum, titanium, or nickel-based systems that contain elements capable of forming nano-precipitates (for example, carbon, vanadium, silicon, or aluminum). The process often involves substantial plastic deformation at elevated or ambient temperatures, rapid quenching to limit grain growth, and an isothermal or multi-stage aging treatment to establish a fine second-phase distribution.

Performance and status: reported advantages include improved hardness and wear resistance with only modest loss of ductility, but challenges include process control, residual stresses, grain growth during aging, and high production costs.
