Naudanlaatikko, literally meaning “beef casserole,” is a traditional Finnish baked dish that belongs to the family of hearty meat-and-potato casseroles common in Finnish home cooking. The dish is typically made with beef (diced or minced), potatoes, and onions, and may include carrots, barley or rice, and a binding agent such as milk or cream and sometimes eggs. Seasonings commonly include salt and pepper, with optional touches of allspice, garlic, or bay leaf. Some recipes use only beef and potatoes; others add vegetables to vary texture and flavor.

To prepare, meat is often browned and seasoned, then combined with sliced or cubed potatoes and other ingredients. The mixture is placed in a greased baking dish and baked in the oven until the meat is cooked and the potatoes are tender, typically at about 175–200 degrees Celsius for 60–90 minutes. Some versions layer ingredients before baking, others mix them together. A crunchy top can be achieved with a light breadcrumb or grated cheese in some family recipes.

Naudanlaatikko is commonly served hot, often with lingonberry sauce or pickled cucumber for a contrasting sweet-tart note. It is a practical, budget-friendly dish that has been part of Finnish home cooking since the 20th century and remains a staple in traditional meals. Regional and modern variations exist, including substitutions of ground beef for diced meat, different starches, or dairy products.
