Natuurgas is a naturally occurring mixture of gases, primarily methane, found in underground geological deposits. It is a fossil fuel formed over millions of years from the remains of ancient organisms. The composition of natuurgas can vary, but methane typically accounts for 70% to 90% of the mixture, with smaller amounts of ethane, propane, butane, and other hydrocarbons. It also contains non-hydrocarbon gases such as nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and hydrogen sulfide.

The extraction of natuurgas is carried out through drilling into subterranean reservoirs. Once extracted, it undergoes processing to remove impurities like water, sulfur compounds, and heavier hydrocarbons, making it suitable for use. Natuurgas is a significant source of energy worldwide, widely used for heating homes and businesses, generating electricity, and as a fuel for industrial processes. Its combustion produces carbon dioxide and water vapor, and like other fossil fuels, its use contributes to greenhouse gas emissions. Its transport is typically done via pipelines or as liquefied natural gas (LNG).
