Nanoferrites are ferrite nanoparticles with sizes typically in the 5 to 50 nanometer range. They are usually spinel ferrites with formula MFe2O4, where M is a divalent metal such as Ni, Co, Zn, Mn, or Cu, often doped or substituted. The crystalline spinel structure and nanoscale dimensions give rise to size- and composition-dependent magnetic properties, including superparamagnetism at small sizes and high saturation magnetization for certain compositions. The high surface area and surface spin disorder also influence magnetic and catalytic behavior.
