Nikolai Nikolaevich Bogoliubov (1909–1992) was a Soviet theoretical physicist and mathematician, renowned for foundational advances in quantum many-body theory and quantum statistical mechanics. His most enduring contribution is the Bogoliubov transformation, a canonical transformation of particle creation and annihilation operators that diagonalizes quadratic Hamiltonians describing weakly interacting systems.

In the theory of a weakly interacting Bose gas, Bogoliubov showed that elementary excitations acquire a phonon-like spectrum at low momenta, explaining superfluidity and shaping later concepts of Bose-Einstein condensation. He extended these techniques to fermionic systems, which played a central role in the development of the BCS theory of superconductivity by introducing Bogoliubov quasiparticles to diagonalize the superconducting Hamiltonian.

The Bogoliubov–de Gennes equations, which describe superconductors with spatial inhomogeneity, originate from these methods and remain a standard tool in condensed matter physics. Bogoliubov also contributed to quantum field theory, statistical mechanics, and the mathematical foundations of many-body problems.

He held leadership roles in Soviet science institutes and was a prominent member of the Soviet Academy of Sciences, influencing research directions through mid-20th-century physics and mathematics. His work is widely cited in textbooks and remains central to the study of quantum fluids, superconductivity, and many-body theory.
