Applications are diverse. They are used for product labeling, packaging, shipping, inventory control, asset tagging, and barcoding or QR code labeling. They also serve promotional, branding, and decorative purposes, as well as security roles such as tamper-evident or anti-counterfeit labels.

Environmental and regulatory considerations are relevant. Label design may need to meet food safety, labeling, and environmental standards, depending on use. Recycling and waste concerns arise because adhesive labels can affect paper recycling streams; alternative eco-friendly materials and adhesives are increasingly available.

Historically, self-adhesive labels gained prominence in the mid-20th century with advances in pressure-sensitive adhesives and release liners, leading to widespread use across industries.
