Najveja is a small coastal settlement situated in the western part of Croatia, within the administrative boundaries of Zadar County. The village lies on the northern shore of the Adriatic Sea, approximately 15 kilometers north of the city of Zadar, and is part of the municipality of Benkovac. With an area of roughly 7.4 square kilometres, Najveja is characterized by a mix of low-lying farmland and scattered pine forests that line its shoreline. The local topography features a gentle rise in the center of the village, which historically provided a strategic viewpoint against sea vessels.

According to the 2011 national census, Najveja had a population of 126 residents, a slight decline from the 139 inhabitants recorded in 2001. The majority of the community is engaged in small-scale agriculture, primarily cultivating olives, grapes, and citrus fruits, alongside a modest fishing sector that supplies fresh seafood to nearby markets. The earliest documented references to Najveja date to the 14th century, when the area was part of the Kingdom of Croatia. The name is believed to derive from the Slavic root *najveći*, meaning “largest” or “greatest,” possibly reflecting a local legend about the village’s prominence in the medieval period. During the Venetian rule from the 16th to early 18th centuries, Najveja experienced significant cultural exchange, evidenced by the presence of Venetian architectural motifs in the village church and communal buildings. The late 19th and early 20th centuries saw a modest influx of Italian settlers, who contributed to the region’s culinary traditions.

In contemporary times, Najveja retains a strong sense of local identity, with annual festivals celebrating its patron saint, St. George, and the annual harvest of olive oil. The village is governed locally by a council that operates within the larger municipal framework of Benkovac, ensuring that regional development plans align with the community’s needs and preserve its cultural heritage.
