Nagajuban, or 長襦袢, is a traditional long undergarment worn beneath a kimono. It protects the outer garment from sweat and oils and helps create a smooth, layered silhouette. Like the kimono, it is wrapped left over right and secured at the waist with ties known as koshi-himo. The collar of the nagajuban shows at the neck, contributing to the overall line of the ensemble.

Nagajuban fabrics vary by season and formality. Common materials include silk, rayon, cotton, and blends, with unlined or lightly lined versions for warmer weather and thicker versions for cooler months. Colors are usually pale or white for everyday wear, while more formal outfits may use subtle patterns or colored linings.

Construction features long sleeves and a front overlap that closes with small ties along the opening. The nagajuban is worn under the kimono and its collar lies beneath the outer collar, helping to shape the neckline. Some versions include a collar stay to maintain a neat line, but many rely on the outer garment to finish the neckline once dressed.

Care and maintenance depend on fabric; silk nagajuban require careful cleaning, often dry cleaning, while cotton and synthetic versions may be machine washable. They are typically stored folded to minimize creasing and kept clean to protect outer garments.
