It is commonly an open-to-sky courtyard or a semi-covered hall, designed to provide light and ventilation throughout the house.

Architectural characteristics include timber columns and beams, plastered walls, and a floor that may be finished with stone, tile, or burnt earth. The space often integrates a raised platform or seating area and is enclosed by surrounding corridors or verandas, which facilitate movement and social interaction while enabling air flow.
