Nätverksadapters, also known as network interface controllers (NICs) or network cards, are essential hardware components that enable a computer or device to connect to a network. They act as the interface between the device and the network medium, translating data into signals that can be transmitted and received.

These adapters can be integrated directly into the motherboard of a device (onboard) or be a separate expansion card that is plugged into a slot. When a device sends data, the network adapter converts this data into packets suitable for network transmission. Conversely, when receiving data, the adapter takes incoming signals from the network, converts them back into a format the device can understand, and passes them on to the operating system. This process ensures seamless communication between devices on a local area network (LAN) or a wider wide area network (WAN), including the internet.

Network adapters have unique media access control (MAC) addresses, a globally unique identifier assigned during manufacturing, which is used for device identification on a local network segment. Their functionality is crucial for any networked operation, from browsing the web and sending emails to accessing shared resources and participating in online gaming.
