Mëlçia is the Albanian word for liver. The liver is a vital organ found in vertebrates, located in the upper right quadrant of the abdominal cavity, below the diaphragm and above the stomach, right kidney, and intestines. It is the largest internal organ and the largest gland in the human body.

The liver performs a multitude of essential functions, including detoxification of blood, protein synthesis, and the production of biochemicals necessary for digestion. It plays a crucial role in metabolism, processing nutrients absorbed from the small intestine. Bile, a fluid produced by the liver, aids in the digestion of fats in the small intestine. The liver also stores glycogen, a form of glucose that serves as a readily available energy source.

Diseases affecting the liver can have significant health consequences. Common liver conditions include hepatitis, cirrhosis, fatty liver disease, and liver cancer. These conditions can arise from various causes, such as viral infections, alcohol abuse, autoimmune disorders, genetic factors, and exposure to toxins. Early detection and management of liver diseases are important for maintaining overall health and preventing serious complications. In severe cases, liver transplantation may be necessary to replace a damaged liver with a healthy one.
