Mäntäpumppu, also known as a piston pump, is a type of positive displacement pump. It operates by using a reciprocating piston to move a fluid. The pump consists of a cylinder, a piston that moves back and forth within the cylinder, and inlet and outlet valves.

In its simplest form, a single-acting piston pump works as follows: As the piston moves outwards, it creates a lower pressure within the cylinder, causing the inlet valve to open and the fluid to be drawn into the cylinder. When the piston moves inwards, it increases the pressure, closing the inlet valve and forcing the fluid out through the open outlet valve. Double-acting pumps, which have two sets of inlet and outlet valves, can pump fluid during both the forward and backward strokes of the piston, resulting in a more continuous flow.

They are commonly found in water supply systems, hydraulic systems, and in industrial processes for pumping various liquids, including oils, chemicals, and slurries.
