Myrkur is a musical project led by Danish singer-songwriter Amalie Bruun, formed in 2014 in Copenhagen. The project blends black metal with folk, ambient, and atmospheric textures, and Bruun writes and performs much of the material, shaping a distinctive vocal and sonic identity. The name is derived from Nordic terms for darkness, reflecting the project’s dark and haunting aesthetic.

The debut album, M, was released in 2015 and established Myrkur’s blend of dense guitar work, ethereal vocals, and moody atmospherics. It was followed by Mareridt in 2017, an album that expanded the sound with heavier passages and richer arrangements while maintaining the project’s ethereal and cinematic feel. In 2020, Myrkur released Folkesange, a notable shift toward folk music. Folkesange features acoustic arrangements of Nordic folk songs alongside new material, sung in Danish and other languages, and marks a departure from the black metal emphasis of the previous records.

Musically, Myrkur has been described as a cross-genre project, combining elements of black metal, folk, and ambient music. Bruun’s vocal style—often described as haunting and melodic—recurs across releases, contributing to the project’s atmospheric identity. Myrkur has performed at numerous festivals and venues around the world, drawing attention for its stark contrasts between aggression and quiet introspection. The project remains a notable example of genre blending within the Nordic metal and folk scenes.
