The muskie, also known as the muskelunge, is a large species of freshwater fish belonging to the pike family. It is native to North America, found in lakes and large rivers in Canada and the northern United States. Muskies are apex predators, known for their long, torpedo-shaped bodies, large mouths filled with sharp teeth, and distinctive mottled or striped coloration. They are typically olive green to brown with darker vertical bars or spots.

These fish are highly sought after by anglers for their challenging pursuit and impressive size. Muskies can grow to be over five feet long and weigh more than fifty pounds, making them one of the largest freshwater fish in their range. They inhabit weedy bays, drop-offs, and areas with structure, ambushing their prey which primarily consists of smaller fish, but they are also known to eat waterfowl and small mammals that venture too close to the water's surface.

Muskie populations are sensitive to habitat degradation and overfishing, leading to conservation efforts in many areas. Their elusive nature and powerful fight make them a legendary quarry for anglers, often referred to as the "fish of 10,000 casts."
