Muskelvävnad, also known as muscle tissue, is a specialized tissue in animals that enables movement. It is composed of muscle cells, also called muscle fibers, which contain contractile proteins like actin and myosin. When these proteins slide past each other, the muscle fibers shorten, resulting in muscle contraction.

There are three main types of muscle tissue: skeletal muscle, smooth muscle, and cardiac muscle. Skeletal muscle is voluntary and responsible for conscious movements such as walking or lifting objects. It is characterized by its striated appearance under a microscope. Smooth muscle, found in the walls of internal organs like the digestive tract and blood vessels, is involuntary and controls functions like digestion and blood pressure regulation. Cardiac muscle is found exclusively in the heart and is also involuntary, responsible for pumping blood throughout the body. It shares some structural similarities with skeletal muscle but has unique properties for continuous, rhythmic contractions.

The primary functions of muscle tissue include movement, maintaining posture, stabilizing joints, and generating heat. Muscle activity is regulated by the nervous system, which sends signals to the muscle fibers to contract or relax. The energy required for muscle contraction is supplied by ATP, which is produced through cellular respiration. Disruptions in muscle function can lead to various conditions, including muscle weakness, pain, and paralysis.
