Muskelrekrytering, often translated as muscle recruitment, refers to the process by which the nervous system activates and controls motor units within a muscle. A motor unit consists of a single motor neuron and all the muscle fibers it innervates. When a muscle contracts, the brain signals motor neurons to fire, causing their associated muscle fibers to shorten and generate force.

The nervous system recruits motor units in a graded manner, meaning it can selectively activate different numbers and types of motor units depending on the required force. Smaller, slower-twitch motor units are typically recruited for less demanding tasks requiring fine control and endurance. As the intensity of the contraction increases, larger, faster-twitch motor units are recruited, contributing more force and speed to the movement.
