Musikknotasjon, or music notation, is the system of symbols used to represent musical sounds in written form. It conveys pitch, duration, rhythm, and expressive directions so performers can interpret a composition.

The basic elements are the staff, clefs, notes and rests, and the system of measures and meter. Notes indicate pitch and duration; rests indicate silences. The key signature orients the tonal center; the time signature defines rhythm; tempo marks indicate speed. Dynamics and articulation signs convey volume and attack, while ornaments specify embellishments.

Historically, Western notation evolved from neumes in medieval chant toward a more precise staff notation in the High Middle Ages. Innovations by Guido d'Arezzo and the later adoption of a five-line staff helped standardize pitch notation. The invention of movable type and engraving enabled widespread printing of scores, supporting the growth of orchestral and ensemble music in the modern era.

Although Western staff notation is dominant in many contexts, other systems exist, such as tablature for stringed instruments, percussion notation, or shape-note and cipher notation in various traditions. Non-Western traditions may use melodic contour, numerals, or syllabic notation. Modern practice often combines standard notation with digital notation and audio formats.

In contemporary use, notation is supported by computer programs for composition, engraving, and playback. While capable of encoding most musical parameters, notation cannot fully capture performance aspects such as phrasing, rubato, or timbre, and performers rely on tradition, cueing, and rehearsal to realize a piece.
