Muoviosia is a term encountered in speculative discussions and some fiction to describe a regime in which macroscopic movement emerges from microscopic rearrangements within a viscous medium. The coinage blends Italian roots “muovere” (to move) with a suffix echoing terms like “-osis” that denote a state or condition. In different accounts, muoviosia refers to either: (1) motion generated by the active reorganization of particles in a dense gel; or (2) an effective motility of larger bodies through an environment shaped by the medium’s micro-dynamics.

Distinctions: It is not the same as simple diffusion or classical propulsion. In muoviosia, internal activity of the medium (for example, contractile fibers, molecular motors, or chemical gradients) couples with the rheology of the host to produce bulk transport without a conventional thrust. The concept is sometimes used to illustrate ideas in active matter and viscoelastic remodeling, or as a plot device in science fiction to explain a city’s movement pattern through crowded streets.
