Muodonvaihto is a Finnish term meaning the change of form. It describes processes where something changes its appearance, structure, or organization.

Etymology: muoto means shape or form, vaihto means change. The term is used across disciplines to denote a transformation from one form to another, whether in language, biology, or art.

In linguistics, muodonvaihto refers to how words alter their form to express grammatical categories such as tense, number, case, mood, or voice. This is usually achieved through inflection (taivutus) and, in derivation, through affixation. For example, in Finnish, the verb mennä changes to menen (I go) and menimme (we went) to mark person and tense; the noun talo becomes talon in the genitive and talot in the plural.

In biology, muodonvaihto often denotes metamorphosis, the transformation of an animal's body during development. Classic examples include caterpillars into butterflies, tadpoles into frogs, and insect life cycles with larval and pupal stages.

In technology and art, shape morphing refers to a controlled transition between two outlines or images, used in animation, visual effects, and user interfaces.
