Muodollisuusasteesta refers to a concept in theoretical chemistry that describes the degree to which a chemical system approximates ideal behavior. The microstate of a system is a particular configuration of the constituent particles, such as atoms or molecules, that defines a specific set of thermodynamic properties. The ensemble of all possible microstates that a system can occupy is known as the phase space or configurational space.

In a system with a single type of particle, the microstates are typically distinguishable by their arrangement and kinetic energy. In a classical picture, the particles are treated as point masses that wander without restraint at a temperature fixed by the spectroscopic requirements. However, at the molecular scale, quantum effects become important, and the classical behavior is often replaced by quantal deviations.

When the particles in a system are many, the concept of single-particle energy levels may become less important, and a continuum description of an ensemble becomes more realistic. This is the thermodynamic limit, in which the properties are independent of the system size. The morphology or just'morph' (Lat. take form) was first discussed by many of the mathematicians.

In statistical mechanics, ensemble theory provides the formal tool to describe a system where there are an infinite number of microscopic states. The macroscopic properties of a system, including its free energy, entropy, and pressure, can be derived from the concept of ensemble, thus relating to microscopic systems that can be thermodynamically equivalent.
