Multivalentteja, plural of multivalentti in Finnish, are entities with more than one valence or binding site. The term covers molecules, ions or particles capable of forming several simultaneous interactions, which often yields higher overall binding strength (avidity) than a single site would provide.

In chemistry and biochemistry, multivalency describes ligands with multiple donor groups that can coordinate to a metal ion or bind to a biological receptor. Multivalent metal ions such as Ca2+, Fe3+, and Al3+ can form networks with several ligands. Polymers and dendrimers can display many functional groups to enable multivalent contacts with targets.

In immunology, multivalent antigens present several epitopes, promoting stronger B-cell receptor engagement and activation. Multivalent vaccines combine multiple antigens or epitopes to broaden protection, as in influenza vaccines that include several strains or virus-like particle vaccines presenting multiple epitopes.

In nanomedicine and materials science, multivalent designs improve targeting and binding to cells or surfaces. Nanoparticles, glycopolymers and other constructs can display many copies of a ligand to increase selectivity and binding strength; however, entropic costs and steric factors can limit effectiveness and complicate design.

The concept of multivalency is related to valence and avidity and is foundational in chemistry, immunology and materials science. Understanding multivalent interactions helps explain complex binding behavior, cross-linking processes, and the development of multivalent reagents, vaccines, and targeted delivery systems.
