Multitrait refers to the consideration or measurement of multiple traits or constructs within a single framework. In psychology, psychometrics, and related fields, multitrait approaches are used to assess several distinct attributes simultaneously to improve the validity and interpretability of measurements.

A central concept is the multitrait-multimethod (MTMM) matrix, introduced by Campbell and Fiske in 1959. The MTMM framework evaluates construct validity by examining correlations among multiple traits measured using multiple methods. Convergent validity is indicated when measures of the same trait obtained by different methods correlate highly. Discriminant validity is supported when correlations between different traits—especially across methods—are lower, demonstrating that the traits are distinct. The MTMM design also helps reveal method effects, where the measurement method inflates correlations independent of the trait.

Beyond MTMM, multitrait analysis encompasses a range of multivariate techniques that model several traits simultaneously. This includes factor analysis and structural equation modeling, which seek to uncover the underlying structure of multiple interrelated traits and their relationships with latent factors or other variables.

Applications of multitrait approaches span test construction, personality and social psychology, educational measurement, and survey design. They are used to develop reliable scales, compare measurement methods, and assess the validity of theoretical constructs. Limitations include design complexity, the need for large samples to achieve stable estimates, and potential interpretational challenges, such as distinguishing true trait overlap from method-related artifacts.
