Multimovement is a framework in social movement theory that describes a political field in which multiple social movements interact, coordinate, and sometimes merge their efforts to pursue overlapping or related goals. Rather than operating in isolation, actors from different movements form coalitions, share resources, and align strategies to increase influence on public opinion, policy, and institutions.

The concept emphasizes that contemporary political issues are complex and interconnected. Movements frequently span issues such as racial justice, gender equality, labor rights, environmental protection, and indigenous rights. Coalition building can take the form of formal alliances, joint demonstrations, cross-movement campaigns, or shared framing that links distinct grievances under a common cause. Multimovement dynamics can broaden participation, diversify repertoires of protest, and enhance legitimacy by presenting a larger, more diverse base of support.

Key features include overlapping participation across movements, fluid coalition formation, shared or compatible frames, and the strategic use of varied repertoires—protests, lobbying, legal action, online activism, and institutional engagement. The success of multimovement efforts often depends on effective frame alignment, resource sharing, and the ability to manage tensions that arise from divergent agendas or organizational cultures. Political opportunity structures, media coverage, and public sentiment also influence whether coalitions can sustain alignment over time.

Critics note challenges such as mission drift, coordination costs, potential dilution of specific movement aims, and conflicts over leadership. Proponents argue that multimovement collaboration can amplify voices, create broader legitimacy, and build durable social change by addressing root causes through multiple, reinforcing channels.
