A multimetre, also known as a multimeter or a multitester, is an electronic measuring instrument that combines several measurement functions in a single unit. It is commonly used by electricians, electronics technicians, and hobbyists for testing and troubleshooting electrical circuits.

The most common functions found in a multimetre include measuring voltage (both AC and DC), current (both AC and DC), and resistance. More advanced multimetres may also offer additional features such as continuity testing (which uses a buzzer to indicate a complete circuit), diode testing, capacitance measurement, temperature measurement, and frequency measurement.

Multimetres come in two main types: analog and digital. Analog multimetres use a needle that moves across a calibrated scale to indicate the measurement. Digital multimetres display the measurement as a numerical value on an LCD or LED screen. Digital multimetres are generally more common today due to their higher accuracy, easier readability, and additional features.

Measurements are typically taken by connecting probes to the appropriate terminals on the multimetre and then touching the probes to the points in the circuit being tested. The range of measurement and the function to be performed are selected using a rotary dial or buttons on the device. Safety is paramount when using a multimetre, and users should always be aware of the voltage and current levels they are measuring and use appropriate safety precautions.
