Multiculture, or multiculturalism, refers to the coexistence of diverse cultural groups within a society and the recognition of their equal rights, identities, and contributions. Multiculture differs from assimilation, which seeks to absorb minority groups into a single mainstream culture.

The concept gained prominence in late 20th century amid globalization and immigration. Some countries adopted official multicultural policies: Canada in the 1970s through the Canadian Multiculturalism Act; Australia’s formal recognition of multiculturalism in the 1970s and subsequent policies; other nations debated how to balance equality, social cohesion, and cultural rights within immigration and citizenship frameworks.

Policy approaches vary. Official multiculturalism promotes anti-discrimination, language access, and support for cultural expression, while some scholars advocate interculturalism, emphasizing dialogue and interaction across groups. Debates focus on integration versus preserving distinct identities, the role of schools, media, and public institutions, and the limits of cultural accommodation in civic life.

Research examines outcomes in education, employment, and social trust. Proponents link multiculturalism to innovation and economic growth through diverse skills and networks. Critics warn of parallel societies or erosion of shared civic norms, and they emphasize the need for strong anti-discrimination enforcement and practical pathways to participation for all groups.

Multiculture as a term and policy remains contested and context-dependent. In practice, its success depends on political will, inclusive institutions, and effective social integration that respects diversity while fostering equal citizenship.
