Distinctions: While multiculturalism often emphasizes recognizing and preserving distinct cultural identities within a common polity, interculturalism stresses active engagement between cultures, the development of intercultural competences, and policies that enable shared citizenship and language access in schools, workplaces, and public institutions.

Key principles include equality of rights regardless of cultural background, participation of diverse groups in democratic processes, language and access to services, and educational programs that develop critical intercultural understanding. Policy approaches may include intercultural education in schools, community mediation, bilingual or multilingual service delivery, media that reflect diverse voices, and urban planning that encourages public interaction in diverse neighborhoods.

Origins: The term gained prominence in public policy debates in Europe and North America during the late 20th and early 21st centuries, often as an alternative to assimilationist or purely multicultural models. Proponents argue that structured intercultural dialogue can address prejudice, segregation, and discrimination more effectively by building everyday contact and shared norms.

Criticisms and challenges: Critics warn that interculturalism may overlook power imbalances or place undue emphasis on dialogue at the expense of material equality. Implementations require resources, institutional commitment, and genuine participation from communities.
